Liam is in a rough state when players first meet him in Baldur's Gate 3. He's strapped to a board and being beaten by Torturer Spike. Spike has a Mark of the Absolute, so he's not exactly easy to just scare off or convince to stop. He ultimately wants the information extracted from Liam and won't accept failure.

How To Save Liam

Detect Thoughts

- (Not recommended) Kill the four Goblins in the room before they can kill Liam.
- Pass a Slight of Hand check to unlock the shackles.
- Speak with Liam and he will automatically escape afterward.
Baldur's Gate 3: All Negative Combat Status Effects, Explained
Combat conditions in Baldur's Gate 3 are typically negative and applied by a combat ability, and there are a lot of these Status Effects in the game.
The reason attacking the Goblins is not recommended is because this will likely chain the rest of the Shattered Sanctum. Now some gamers may want to take out all of these Goblins anyhow and that's understandable. But be sure to get the Mark of the Absolute and meet/save all the other innocent people here first.
By convincing the mob to leave, players can rescue Liam without any prying eyes. In fact, players can try the Sleight of Hand check more than once since there is nobody immediately threatening Liam and the adventurers. Switch party members between the conversation and Sleight of Hand checks to get the best results.
