Summary

  • Battlefield 6 is rumored to bring back Battle Royale mode, an exciting prospect for players.
  • Battlefield 5 tried a Battle Royale back in 2019, but it didn't quite catch on with players.

A new rumor has suggested that Battlefield 6 could bring back the Battle Royale game mode first featured in Battlefield 5. DICE didn't include the mode in Battlefield 2042, so a potential return in Battlefield 6 is exciting news.

After Battlefield 2042 received mixed reviews from players and critics alike, the franchise has taken a step back for a few years to ensure it gets back on the right track going forward. Just recently, EA announced Battlefield Labs, a new testing program that will allow players to try out the next installment and provide useful feedback for the full release. While DICE has continued to update and improve Battlefield 2042 in the years since its release, it would undoubtedly be much better for the series' reputation to provide a smooth launch this time around.

In a post responding to a question about a potential Battle Royale in Battlefield 6, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson had a simple one-word answer, saying, "Yeah." Henderson didn't provide any further details about the potential mode, but its rumored addition is definitely an exciting prospect. Battlefield has always been one of the best series for large-scale combat, which fits in perfectly with the core concept of a Battle Royale mode.

Battlefield 6 May Bring Back Battle Royale

If it does come to fruition, then it won't be the first time the series has tried its hand at a Battle Royale mode. Battlefield 5 had Firestorm, a 64-player Battle Royale mode that didn't quite catch on with players upon its 2019 release. While the gameplay worked, the 64-player limit and the fact players had to buy Battlefield 5 to play meant it struggled to compete with other free-to-play Battle Royales at the time. The mode did not return in 2021's Battlefield 2042, although it will be interesting to see what changes are made to the formula to ensure its success this time around.

EA has yet to confirm exactly when Battlefield 6 will be released. Hopefully, information about the game will start to trickle out over the course of the year. There are plenty of rumors at the moment, including claims that the next Battlefield will feature Battlefield Portal, a popular game mode that allows players to design custom games using elements from previous titles in the series. Until concrete details are available, this should be taken with a pinch of salt, however.
