When it comes to lineage, there are numerous characters that have great and surprising parents in Blue Exorcist. However, none of them are as ridiculous and tragic as the lineage of the main characters themselves, Rin and Yukio Okumura. Quite early on in the series, we already know that the Okumura brothers are the sons of a normal human mother. It is their father, however, that is quite surprising. Because their dad is none other than Satan himself.
That alone is already quite shocking. What most people may not realize, however, is how devastating the real story about their parents actually is. This article will unveil the true story of Rin and Yukio’s parents. The anime and manga each take different approaches to their origin story, but this article will stick to the manga.
Who is The Okumura Brothers
Rin and Yukio Okumura are fraternal twin brothers who choose to follow the step of their adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto. So they become exorcists and dedicate themselves to save people from the danger of demons.
Unbeknownst to Rin, however, Yukio has already become an exorcist years before Rin even thinks about such a decision. As a result, although Rin is technically the older brother between the two, Yukio is his superior when it comes to being an exorcist. After all, when this article is written, Yukio has already become a Paladin, the highest rank an exorcist can attain, while Rin is still an Exwire, basically just a student-exorcist.
Although the brothers hate their biological father with the burning rage of a thousand suns, both of them can still harness Satan’s power to some extent. Out of the two, Rin is the one that inherits the power of the blue fire from his father. Which is why whenever he unleashes that power, a pair of horns and a tail made out of blue flame will appear on his body. As for Yukio, he is more or less a normal human. However, his left eye is connected to Satan and when activated, whether he wanted to or not, Satan will be able to see through Yukio’s body and force his will on him.
How Their Parents Meet
As mentioned earlier, the boys’ father is the king of the underworld, Satan. While their mother is a regular human being called Yuri Egin. Yuri was an orphan that was raised by a couple of homeless people when she met the young Shiro Fujimoto. Yuri quickly becomes attached to Shiro and even joins the True Cross Academy and become an exorcist just like him. Unlike Shiro, however, she believes that Demons and Humans can understand and live together in harmony. This belief is also what makes her closer to Satan. To be fair, when Yuri first met Satan, he was just a small blue fire. She thinks of him as her little demon friend, and even names him Rinka.
After a couple of years in True Cross Academy and working as an exorcist together, Yuri finally realizes that she is in love with the man who saved her and has been with her for all these years, Shiro Fujimoto. What Yuri doesn’t realize, however, is the fact that the Shiro is actually an experimental subject of the True Cross Academy in their attempts to create the perfect body for the Demon Kings. After all, demons need to possess a living human body if they want to materialize in the human world.
Unbeknownst to anybody, Satan manages to possess one of the failed clones of the Order that is pretty much identical to Shiro. Since Yuri is the only human that has been with Satan for years, he demands to be with her all the time or else he threatens to kill every human that he sees. And that is how Yuri and Satan ended up spending time together. Through their interaction, Yuri begins to think that Satan is truly capable of compassion and can be taught to be kind to human beings. And as she opens up her heart to him, and the fact that he looks identical to the man that she loves, the inevitable thing happens, and she ends up getting pregnant with Satan’s child.
What Happened to Their Parents
When the True Cross Order realizes that Yuri is pregnant, they immediately separate Yuri from Satan. At the time, the clone body that Satan possessed started to deteriorate because it couldn’t contain his enormous power. As if that’s not enough, being separated from Yuri makes him emotionally unstable as well.
Things are extremely chaotic when Yuri gives birth to the twins. Rin, in particular, is an uncontrollable little demon that manages to hurt numerous high-level members of the Order. At the same time, Satan goes on a rampage by possessing different people in his attempt to find the right body, killing hundreds of innocent people, and wreaking havoc in the city in the process. That terrible night will be remembered as the Blue Night.
When Shiro Fujimoto, who has become an incredibly powerful exorcist, sealed Rin powers into the Kurikara sword, while the other high-rank exorcists work together to banish Satan, things have finally begun to calm down. However, when the True Cross Order plans to kill both Yuri and her babies, Shiro decides to betray the Order and flee together with Yuri. Unfortunately, Yuri has become too weak at this point. She dies in the arms of the man that she loves with a smile on her face, wishing the best for her boys.
When Shiro gets back to the Order, Mephisto Pheles forces him to take care of the child and train them to be a proper warrior. And that is how Shiro Fujimoto becomes the adoptive father for Rin and Yukio. Satan, on the other hand, knows that his sons are the perfect vessel for him. So he bids his time until they are ready to be possessed.
