What is the Blue Night?

The Blue Night Had Taken the Lives of Many and Brought Chaos to Assiah

There are two versions of the Blue Night, and both versions include tales of Satan possessing multiple humans in an attempt to gain a viable body to live in Assiah. The first is the version told by the survivors to cover up the real reason behind the Blue Night, and the second version is the truth behind the events that happened on the Blue Night and why it is referred to as the Blue Night.

It was initially believed that sixteen years ago, the Blue Night took place, and Satan murdered countless numbers of the world’s greatest holy men; among these men were the members of the Myo Dha temple, the Vatican, Grigori, and other significant holy members. The blue flames are the mark of Satan as Assiah, the human world, is symbolized with red flame and Gehenna, the Demon world, with black flame, thereby creating blue flame when the two overlap, as mentioned in Chapter 110.

The initial version of the Blue Night, which the survivors have told, is a delicate topic to broach with those who do not know the night's events. To many, the Blue Night occurred out of nowhere, and Satan began possessing humans indiscriminately in search of a vessel. Due to the mass death that occurred sixteen years ago, many resent Satan and wish to defeat him, similar to Suguro Ryuji’s ambitions.

Shiemi has seen a significant change in her actions and abilities. Now more confident, how much has Shiemi changed since Season 1 of Blue Exorcist?

It was not only the deaths that occurred that night that affected those within the exorcist community. Due to the deaths, many individuals also left the Myo Dha temple, as it had now been deemed as the “cursed temple,” as a result of this, many monks and worshipers refused to attend the temple, likely causing a possible loss of income and livelihood.

As mentioned above, the version told by the survivors of the Blue Night was not entirely correct. In reality, all survivors of the Blue Night were contracted to sign a Morinath Contract. The Morinath Contract was to ensure the actual events of the Blue Night were covered up by the True Cross Order of Knights. If a contractee were to reveal the actual events of the Blue Night and thus defy the contract, a demon would kill them.

What Are the Actual Events of the Blue Night?

In the second version of events, sixteen years ago, Yuri Egin was about to give birth to Okumura Rin and Yukio. Unfortunately, Yuri experienced a horrifying birth as she already passed her due date by four weeks. As Yuri was pregnant with Satan's children, she could not receive any medical assistance due to the Cradle Barrier, which was a curse that would affect any individual who interfered with the birth.

As Yuri gave birth to Rin, who possessed the Blue Flames of Satan, Rin began to wreak havoc on those within the vicinity. This was due to Rin’s demon side taking control at birth. As mentioned above, the reason for the Blue Night was due to Satan seeking a body to possess. At the time of Yuri’s labor, the body that Satan had currently been possessing was nearly deteriorated. As a result, the body's brain had also faced deterioration, which was likely the cause of his erratic behavior.

Blue Exorcist: How Much Has Rin Changed Since Season 1?

Starting as an impulsive rebel, Rin's journey through Blue Exorcist has matured him into a more controlled and reliable protector.

After Rin had been born, Yuri had been on the verge of death. Satan could sense that Yuri was about to die, and in his desperation and yearning, he began frantically searching for her. The Blue Night began because Satan had been searching for Yuri, who was on the verge of death. To do this, Satan began to possess anyone in the hopes of finding her location. Due to Satan’s obsession with Yuri, when he was unable to find her, he believed she had betrayed him after they promised to stay together. However, as he was unable to find her, Satan, in his anger, began to move from body to body in search of her.

The final person Satan was able to possess was Father Fujimoto; this was because Father Fujimoto was also one of the clones created in Section 13; however, due to Father Fujimoto’s mental strength, he was able to overcome Satan’s possession and thus save Rin and Yukio from execution.
