Rightly or wrongly, there are certain genres that many believe are better suited to PC. FPS games are a great example of this, with some players feeling that a mouse and keyboard will always be better for aiming than a controller. However, these perceptions have been gradually shifting over the past few decades, with developers looking for ways to make their games more accessible to home console players.

Every Civilization Game, Ranked

Here are all of the purely Civilization games of the franchise, ranked by their scores and main strengths.

The first five Civilization games never even made it to console, such were the limitations back then. However, in 2019, the series finally made the leap to PlayStation and Xbox, and, for the most part, it was able to stick the landing. Review scores for Civ 6 on console typically fall within one or two points of the PC version, leading many to wonder whether they should play Civilization VII on PC or console.

Civ 7 PC vs Console Differences

When it comes to content, the Xbox and PlayStation ports of Civ 7 will be more or less the same as the PC version at launch, though console ports of Civilization VII will feature a custom UI designed with controllers in mind. As for performance, there's nothing to suggest that a console won't be able to perform just as well as a similarly specced PC. As such, the only major difference between console and PC is that the PC version of Civ 7 will support mods, which may prove to be a deal-breaker for some players.

The Nintendo Switch version of Civilization VII only supports the Duel, Tiny, and Small map sizes. These map size restrictions will be enforced during crossplay multiplayer sessions involving one or more Switch players, so those considering picking Civ 7 up on Switch should keep this in mind.

Should You Buy Civ 7 on PC or Console? (PS5 or PC)

Anyone who plans on modding Civ 7 should buy the game on PC. If you aren't interested in mods though, there's no reason not to play Civ 7 on PS5 or Xbox Series. For anyone who's still on the fence, it's worth noting that Civilization VII will support cross-progression through the player's 2K account, so some may opt to pick the game up on one platform at launch and then grab it again for the other when it goes on sale somewhere further down the line.
