There are some anime that, despite being finished for many years, remain a relevant part of the otaku world. One of the most famous ones is arguably Death Note, which finished airing in 2007. Now, nearly two decades later, Death Note still has a strong hold on the anime community, and continues to be a top favorite anime for otaku around the world. And while Japan usually has anime-themed shops and cafes for current anime, sometimes Death Note still rolls around due to its ongoing popularity.

In this case, a new limited time pop-up shop has been announced by the Japanese news website PR Times. This store will sell all-new and exclusive Death Note merchandise to fans, which can be hard to find in Japan due to the anime's age. However, this store has something truly unique going for it as well; rather than focusing on a main character like Light Yagami or L, the store will be focused on the anime's femme fatale, Misa Amane.

Why Misa Amane?

Who is this Anime Girl?

Misa Amane, Death Note

Death Note is a story dominated by predominantly male characters. The main character, Light Yagami, his shimigami companion Ryuk, and his adversary L were all men. Light's later enemies were also men. The police force trying to capture him were men. And among all of these male characters, there was Misa Amane. Misa was Light's love interest, a Gothic Lolita-esque girl who had her own death note and shinigami, too.

Misa captured the hearts of fans around the world with her style and her attitude. Men and women both fell for her, wishing they could be her, or have her. Misa persevered through most of the anime and appeared in almost every episode. She worked alongside Light and unerringly supported him through everything that happened, her own grey morals aligning perfectly with the tone of the story. Misa's design made her an extremely popular character to cosplay in the 2000s, and she remains popular to cosplay even today.

It isn't a huge surprise that a Death Note store has chosen to put Misa into the spotlight. Since the anime has been around nearly two decades, the other characters have had their chance to shine. In order to keep fans interested in spending their money, merchandise has to be kept fresh and new so that they have a reason to buy it. Thus, choosing one of the most popular goth characters of all time, who remains relevant today, was a smart move by the masterminds behind this new Death Note pop-up shop.

A New Death Note Store with a Special Theme

How Misa Takes the Spotlight

This new and exclusive Death Note store focused on Misa Amane is called DEATH NOTE –My Dear Light– (herein, My Dear Light). The My Dear Light store is a pop-up shop, which means that it will occupy a space that hosts limited-time stores rather than as a permanent shop. This is really common in Japan, especially for shops that have one specific theme. People come to buy the exclusive merchandise sold only at this limited-time shop, and once the store is gone, its gone. That makes stores like My Dear Light sell well and sell quickly; everyone loves time-limited, exclusive goods.

The Death Note store My Dear Light will have plenty of exclusive goods that have been made just for the shop, most of which feature Misa Amane. The two most exclusive items are large posters with original artwork on them, one in color with Misa standing between portraits of Light and L holding a scythe, and the other a monochrome collage of Misa, with the main artwork for the shop, an image of a blindfolded Misa with her hands folded over her stomach, in the center. These two pieces will sell for 5,500 yen each ($35 USD).

Other Misa-themed items include keychains, a frilly tote bag, socks, t-shirts, and hoodies. Many feature the main artwork of Misa that was created for the My Dear Light shop. For fans who also like the other characters from Death Note, there are some pins, postcards, and keychains that come with random designs featuring other characters in addition to Misa. There is also a collection of acrylic stands that are of manga panels with both Light and Misa. All the artwork in the My Dear Light shop is done in the style of the Death Note manga. Everything available can be viewed on the press release.

PR Times goes so far as to call Death Note an "immortal masterpiece," showing the timelessness of this nearly 20-year-old anime and its ongoing significance in the otaku world. My Dear Light will only be coming to two locations in Japan for now, both in PARCO shopping malls. PARCO Ikebukuro (in Tokyo) and PARCO Nagoya are the two locations lucky enough to host this limited Death Note store. My Dear Light will open in Nagoya first, from February 7th to the 24th, before moving to Ikebukuro where it will be open from March 19th to March 30th.
