As Senku Ishigami finds more and more allies that share the same vision as he does, it becomes possible for him to create an ideal place for himself and the people around him, a place that can help him fulfill his ambition, a place that he can call home; the Kingdom of Science.

Just like any other community, the Kingdom of Science has a very clear division of labor. Senku is part of the research and development division, Tsukasa is responsible for defense, Taiju is responsible for manual labor, Kaseki is responsible for construction, and Kohaku intelligence. Other characters would share their time and ability in any of those divisions. But what about Gen Asagiri? What is the role of a mentalist like Gen in the story of Dr. Stone?

Who is Gen Asagiri?

Before going over his role in the Kingdom of Science, let's talk about who Gen Asagiri is first. That way, we will be able to properly understand what he can bring to the table.

Gen Asagiri was a highly accomplished magician and mentalist in Japan. He was in the middle of a live national television show broadcast when he was petrified. As a Magician, Gen is a highly creative and resourceful person, as noted by the time he packed several fake blood pouches underneath his clothes to deceive his opponent just in case he ever got attacked. Not only that, but as a mentalist, he is also very adept at understanding and manipulating the human psyche. He is an incredibly smooth talker as well. Those two things are Gen's greatest assets.

Although Gen doesn't really have any practical scientific knowledge, nor is he even interested in the topic in the first place, Gen holds a very crucial role that not many other characters can fulfill. Because while he may not know how to create Nitric Acid, his knowledge of the human mind and behavior are second to none.

In a way, you can say that he is specialized in human relations. That is a skill that is rather hard to find in a group of people who are obsessed with science. Sure, there are other people within the Ishigami village who are better suited to handle people rather than scientific experiments, such as Kohaku's sister, Ruri. However, none of them has the same psychological knowledge as a 21st Century mentalist like Gen, not even close.

This means Gen is perfect for roles that involve playing around with the human psyche and predicting the behavior of other people, such as being a spy, a strategist, a negotiator, a mediator, and also an advisor. All of these are some of the roles that Gen has fulfilled throughout the series, particularly when they go against Tsukasa and Dr. Xeno.

Now that we've established some of Gen's roles in the Kingdom of Science, what about his role in the Dr. Stone story as a whole? Gen actually holds several roles in the story. His first role is as the clueless spectator. Whenever the author needs to explain a scientific concept to the readers, he needs to let the knowledgeable characters, such as Senku, explain it to the clueless spectator, such as Gen. Because there's no need for two scientists, like Senku and Dr. Xeno, to explain to each other something basic like synthesizing Nitric Acid. They both already know about it. That is why in order to create an organic exposition, the role of a clueless spectator is highly important, particularly in an information-dense story like Dr. Stone.

The next role that Gen Asagiri has in the story is as Senku's counterpart. Senku is a scientist with a straightforward personality. He always said what he had in mind and rarely ever lied, much less betrayed other people. On the other hand, Gen is a magician/mentalist with a cunning personality. He likes to conceal his true intention and won't hesitate to betray others if he deems it necessary. Senku doesn't have any interest in psychology, while Gen only has a passing interest in science. Both of them couldn't be more different from each other. However, that is also why these two characters can complement each other so well. Their personality and skillsets perfectly cover each other's shortcomings.

In fiction, two completely different personalities usually end up as enemies, such Tanjiro Kamado and Muzan Kibutsuji from Demon Slayer, or Ichigo Kurosaki and Sosuke Aizen from Bleach. The reason is simply that they cannot relate to each other. Both will solve the same problem using a radically different method. After all, what one considers to be a good idea might turn out to be a nightmare for the other.

However, by making Senku working together with Gen, it creates a unique relationship dynamic that makes the overall story so much more interesting. Not only can both of them complement each other perfectly, but they can also act as some kind of anchor that prevent each other from taking things too far. Gen can be there to prevent Senku from becoming a full-blown mad scientist, while Senku can be there to prevent Gen from becoming a total fraud. And that is ultimately the role of Gen Asagiri in the story.
