As the holiday season features plenty of sales and even free goodies for gamers, the Epic Games Store is winding down with its yearly mystery game promotion. From now until early January, the store will be releasing one free game every day, which gives players plenty of titles to lead them into the new year. It's a great way to wrap up the year of weekly freebies, and the Epic Games Store had quite a lot of interesting games to give away in 2024. Players can typically snag these treats every Thursday at 11 am CT.

The Epic Games Store has given away roughly 73 titles in 2024 consisting of completely different genres, and that's only counting the weekly free games and not just the daily mystery titles. While some of these rotating games are a bit small in scope, like the day one Astro Duel 2, others were full-blown AAA games and famous releases. In chronological order, here are the 10 best titles given away for free on the Epic Games Store in 2024.

A Plague Tale: Innocence - Mystery Game for January 3

Check out A Plague Tale: Innocence on OpenCritic

A Plague Tale: Innocence gave stealth and survival horror fans a good start to Epic's free offerings for the year, giving players the chance to experience the story of Amicia de Rune and her little brother Hugo as they try to outrun the French Inquisition and the black plague. Using Amicia's slingshot to distract enemies, players will need to make their way through a series of puzzles while trying their best to not be discovered at the same time. On top of that, A Plague Tale: Innocence is known for its excellent, heart-wrenching story.

For those who managed to grab it while it was available, players were able to spend time with an award-winning title for absolutely free. It serves as a great historical adventure with plenty of surprises, especially when it comes to Hugo's fate. Those who enjoyed the adventures of the de Runes didn't have to wait long to see where the story went, as A Plague Tale: Requiem was waiting for them afterward if they wanted something similar to play next.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Week of January 4

Read Game Rant's Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Review

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy helped kick off the year's typical cycle of free games with a big bang. What starts off as a simple quest to capture a creature for the highest bidder eventually sees players working their way as Peter Quill, the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, as they once again have to protect the universe. On top of a fun and classic story is intricate combat and compelling relationship dynamics, making it an excellent pick-up for any EGS user this year.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition - Week of March 4

Read Game Rant's The Outer Worlds Review

The Outer Worlds is most certainly built for those with a diehard love for RPGs. However, genre newcomers shouldn't be afraid to try it as its humor and space travel themes are a great gateway to other similar games like Fallout and Mass Effect. With The Outer Worlds, players will traverse numerous planets to eventually reach the end, taking on different main quests and side quests along the way. It might take some players 13-and-a-half hours to see The Outer Worlds through, but getting lost is certainly part of the fun. The Epic Games Store also went above and beyond, giving away the Spacer's Choice Edition specifically for free, which is an improved version that was released back in 2023.

Super Meat Boy Forever - Week of February 22

Read Game Rant's Super Meat Boy Forever Review

Super Meat Boy Forever serves as a great free game EGS users could have picked up back in February that offers unlimited playthroughs. Super Meat Boy Forever is an autorunner platformer that uses procedurally generated levels to make itself different for each run. This means that no matter how many times players work through the roughly four-and-a-half hour experience, each time through will not be the same. It's still an experience that's a great steal as a free game.

The challenge of Super Meat Boy returns in Super Meat Boy Forever! This time around Meat Boy is always running, like literally...it's an auto-runner. He can't stop and he won't stop. Levels are brutal, death is inevitable, and players will get that sweet feeling of accomplishment after beating a level. Players will run, jump, punch and kick their way through familiar settings and totally new worlds.

What’s better than playing through Super Meat Boy Forever once? The answer is simple: Playing through Super Meat Boy Forever several times and having new levels to play each time. We created over 6000 level chunks and smash them together to create new unique levels and each time the game is completed the option to replay the game appears and generates a whole new experience by presenting different levels with their own unique secret locations. We’ve handcrafted literally thousands of levels for players to enjoy and conquer. You can replay Super Meat Boy Forever from start to finish several times before ever seeing a duplicate level. It is truly a remarkable feat of engineering and a monumental example of ignoring the limits of rational game design and production.

Ghostrunner - Week of April 11

Read Game Rant's Ghostrunner Review

Sliding into April with its cool futuristic samurai look is Ghostrunner, a 2020 action platformer that throws players into the role of the titular character complete with a special katana to wield. Traversing the environment through a parkour system, players need to think and act fast as both the enemies and themselves can be taken out with one swift hit at all times. This playstyle makes Ghostrunner perfect for those who love using the Mantis Blades in Cyberpunk 2077, and outside of that, it serves as a unique experience for anyone who wishes to try it out.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Game of The Year Edition - Week of May 16

Read Game Rant's Dragon Age: Inquisition Review

There are base expectations for every gaming franchise, but a select few break the mold. Dragon Age: Inquisition is one of those entries as it's often praised for its improvements compared to previous entries. Dragon Age: Inquisition may not be the best introductory RPG for new players, but the Epic Games Store still offered a rounded-up 51-hour experience for free for a week. Players can romance a number of their party members, create their own character to immerse themselves in the world with, and enjoy an engaging story and take on Thedas. Plus, all the DLC was included as part of this incredible steal.

Marvel's Midnight Suns - Week of June 6

Read Game Rant's Marvel's Midnight Suns Review

Subverting expectations of a superhero title, Marvel's Midnight Suns brings card-based gameplay to the Epic Games Store free games promotion in 2024. Players take on the role of the Hunter, the child of the recently resurrected Lilith who is corrupting several famous Marvel villains. Marvel's Midnight Suns uses cards as the UI for player abilities, but its overall gameplay depth matches anything to ever come out of Firaxis Games. Those who love a solid story, relationships with NPCs, strong systemic gameplay, Marvel as a whole, and deep mechanics were rewarded when they picked this up for free on EGS.

Fallout Classic Collection - Week of August 29

Sometimes with the Epic Games Store, some deals may end up giving away more games than players usually bargain for. This typically happens through a collection being offered up as part of the promotion that's made up of two or more games, and Fallout Classic Collection certainly qualifies for EGS. Through this, fans could get Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics free of charge. Each game is rather lengthy, with numerous routes to completion at 16 hours (Fallout), 30 hours (Fallout 2), and 33 hours (Tactics), respectively. Not only are these games cult classic RPGs for a reason, but getting them all together for free only sweetens the deal.

Castlevania Anniversary Collection - Week of November 14

Check out the Castlevania Anniversary Collection on OpenCritic

In a similar vein, players could get what was technically eight games for a straight week on the Epic Games Store through the Castlevania Anniversary Collection. These titles include Castlevania, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania 4, The Castlevania Adventure, Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge, Castlevania Bloodlines, and Kid Dracula. These titles are all classics for a reason, and this collection was one of the best offerings of the year by far.

Vampire Survivors - Mystery Game for December 19

Check out Vampire Survivors on OpenCritic

Vampire Survivors comes in as a great addition to Epic's end-of-year mystery game promotion. It's rather easy to pick up and play as well, with fans controlling an automatically attacking character as they fight off hordes of monsters within a time limit. Players can unlock new characters, relics, and weapons for their trouble, with multiple modes to test their skills in. Many players find the core gameplay loop of Vampire Survivors addicting, with its various mechanics serving to make every stage feel different and fun each time.
