Sucker Punch confirms Ghost of Yotei has turned the series into a full-blown franchise and details even more plans for spin-off projects in the future. While Sucker Punch was once known for series like Sly Cooper and inFamous, the Washington-based studio has enjoyed plenty of success lately thanks in large part to its most recent title, Ghost of Tsushima.
The game originally launched on the PS4, but has since seen a Director's Cut release on the PC and PS5 as well. However, there's been plenty of excitement recently with the studio, who announced a new PS5 game called Ghost of Yokei, which takes the franchise into a new direction. Instead of continuing the story with Jin Sakai, Sucker Punch's newer game instead advances time 300 years to 1603, where a mysterious new protagonist named Atsu is exploring the Hokkaido region of Japan. Details regarding the narrative are very slim, but a new interview has seemingly shone a light on the studio's big plans for the franchise.

How Ghost of Tsushima's Role in Secret Level Could Foreshadow a Sequel's Path
Ghost of Tsushima is one of the many games being featured in Secret Level, and it could give a glimpse into the franchise's future.
Speaking with the New York Times, Sucker Punch creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell spoke about the newly announced Ghost of Yokei. While many fans may have been surprised that a new Ghost game went away from protagonist Jin Sakai, the studio looked Ghost of Tsushima's core pillars. Essentially, Ghost of Yokei retains the identity of being a wandering warrior, freely exploring and taking in the beauty of the world. As the team did with Ghost of Tsushima, many developers visited Mount Yotei and Shiretoko National Park to record sounds and take inspiration from the land for the upcoming game.
Ghost of Yotei Marks a Big Change for the Franchise and Its Future
With the announcement of Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch has confirmed that the successes of Ghost of Tsushima is no longer just for a standalone game and has now become a full-blown franchise. The interview mentions that Ghost of Yotei is being positioned as the start of a new Sony franchise, and is set to include things like a movie and other spinoff projects. Ultimately, Sony is hopeful that this series can eventually stand alongside some of the other core PlayStation franchises like God of War.
In fact, fans have likely already been made aware of a few of these spin-off projects through announcements and teases. Currently, a Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation is in development with John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski signed on to direct. While the Sony Pictures production appears to still be a ways off, Amazon Prime animated anthology Secret Level is set to release a Ghost of Tsushima themed episode as one of its 15 planned episodes when it arrives in December.

The sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 exclusive scheduled to drop at some point in 2025. Taking place in 1603, the story will feature a new protagonist and a new Japanese region that is far removed from Tsushima's setting.
