Halls Of Torment is a new horror survival title by indie developers Chasing Carrots that combines simple mechanics with a hellish premise. With a graphic design that takes nostalgic players back a couple of decades, gamers are tasked with the monumental challenge of surviving a 30-minute assault from the demons of hell.
One of the most important keys to a player's survival in Halls Of Torment is to equip their character with the right tools to guarantee success. In the game, there is a multitude of armor options to provide unique benefits and take the form of footwear, helmets, rings, and garments to name a few. When it comes to torso protection, there are seven varieties to choose from, but which are the most effective?
7 Plate Armor
The most basic of armor accompaniments in Halls Of Torment, the Plate Armor is a strong way to start a player's Halls Of Torment campaign. Engrained with a moderate defensive boost, this armor is a solid choice before acquiring the more advanced garments.
Characters equipped with the Plate Armor will provide their enemies with a greater challenge to breach their defenses and cause damage. While wearing this garment, the player's block strength rating is increased by six points.
6 Chain Mail
The everyday soldier's best friend on the battlefield, the Chain Mail is one of the most basic forms of chest protection in the game but nonetheless holds its own as a useful addition to a player's loadout. This garment will have a positive impact on both the health capacity and defensive rating of any character who wears it.
The Chain Mail does not require any great feats to be conquered in-game to access it, but will still reward players for their patronage in Halls Of Torment. With this armor equipped, players will receive a 3-point boost in defense, as well as an additional 10% health capacity. These are great buffers to increase the amount of damage a character can withstand before falling to an unfortunate demise.
5 Hunter's Garb
If a player can establish enough space from their foes to deliver a stationary assault, then the Hunter's Garb is the ultimate tool. This garment grants a significant boost in a character's damage rating while they are standing still, at a rate of a staggering 8% per stationary second.
The Hunter's Garb is limited to providing a 40% damage boost, which would require a character to stand still for five seconds. While this is an extremely useful perk to have, it is not often in the halls that a character can stay still for that long, unless they have a multitude of strong abilities and attacks equipped to handle the masses.
4 Defiant Plate
Defiant by name and built for those defiant by nature, the Defiant Plate is the perfect armor for warriors who just don't know when to quit. This armor does its best work after a player takes damage by increasing defense by 3 points whenever they are hit.
There are some limitations to this armor, as the defensive boost is capped at 30 points, however, it will provide more than enough extra protection to help get out of sticky situations in the halls. It is one of the more difficult items to acquire, as it requires the Shield Maiden to go 28 minutes into a run without any defensive buffs.
3 Blood-Soaked Shirt
While 10 out of 10 doctors would not recommend donning a shirt covered in blood before entering the battle, there is some merit to making use of it in Halls Of Torment. This shirt, while unsanitary, gives players the opportunity to earn back some well-needed health during a run.
Killing an adversary while wearing this shirt will give players a 3% chance of accumulating a bonus health point. While this doesn't sound like much, players will definitely have plenty of opportunities given the thousands of victims they accumulate with each run. In order to unlock this, players will need to accumulate 2,000 health points while playing as the Swordsman.
2 Shadow Cloak
The best kind of armor is one that can literally summon minions to fight by your side. While this can be achieved with some of the other items in other categories, the Shadow Cloak is the only garment with this capability.
The Shadow Cloak allows players to spawn shadows near their character to fight alongside them for a limited time. This is a great passive source of additional offense and can help to either pick off weaker enemies or get a head-start on the stronger ones. As an added bonus, this cloak will also slightly increase a player's blocking capabilities.
1 Blazing Shell
Certainly, the most impressive-looking armor that a player can equip in Halls Of Torment, the Blazing Shell comes with a "do not touch" warning that is thankfully ignored by the demon armies. This armor provides an additional layer of protection whilst simultaneously operating as a passive source of counterattack.
The Blazing Shell garment boosts a player's block strength by six points, however, it is the additional chance of causing burn damage to enemies that really makes it stand out. Any foe who touches a player wearing this armor has a 50% chance of suffering some awful burn damage for their troubles.
Halls of Torment is now available on PC via Steam.
