Star Wars Outlaws protagonist Kay Vess is portrayed by Venezuelan actress Humberly González, who gamers might recognize for her roles in previous Ubisoft titles like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Far Cry 6, and Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Aside from video games, González also boasts dozens of credits in film and television, which gave her some experience portraying characters that bear similarities to Star Wars Outlaws' up-and-comer scoundrel.

Game Rant recently sat down with Humberly González to discuss how she brought Kay Vess to life, and she weighed in on how some parallels between Kay Vess' and her own personality helped create an authentic performance. González also revealed that there were often moments during recording where she could play with the script and personally adjust Kay Vess' dialogue to feel more believable.

Humberly González Was a Natural Fit for Star Wars Outlaws' Kay Vess

As a lowly street thief just getting her feet wet in the galactic underworld community, Kay Vess doesn't initially possess the experience and confidence of a legendary smuggler like Han Solo. Instead, her quick wit and natural charisma have helped her survive in this cutthroat world despite any underlying uneasiness, and traits like these were easy for González to relate to. In fact, González notes that her behavior offscreen was often in line with how Kay Vess herself might act.

"I feel like that swagger and kind of confidence came naturally to me. I've played a few characters that have those qualities. I think Kay Vess is obviously the one who uses it more and relies on it, but you know, once we started working, I remember Navid, our narrative director, being like, 'You know, you’re sitting in that chair like Kay Vess.'

She just has this 'no worries' kind of facade and always has a cool pose and the way that she walks, the swagger, kind of like weighted feet. She's just confident in herself. So I walk around with a lot of that 'fake it till you make it' attitude."

If González does indeed carry a "fake it till you make it" attitude, it wasn't apparent in the interview. Her relaxed and humorous demeanor exhibited the confidence of a Han Solo-type rather than an in-over-her-head scoundrel, and this appears to be precisely how Kay Vess carries herself as she navigates Star Wars Outlaws' seedy underworld.

Game studios tend to afford actors varying degrees of freedom when it comes to their portrayals, and according to González, the developers at Massive Entertainment were more than willing to let her take the reins on set. In González' eyes she truly was Kay Vess, so lines that felt unnatural to González would by extension be unnatural things for Kay Vess to say. As González mentions, the studio cast her for a reason, and they often trusted her judgment with these adjustments.

"It was great when there were moments that I knew when Kay Vess would say something very differently, and sometimes it was as simple as a line was written and I couldn't say it, or I kept forgetting it, or the words weren’t matching and I was like, 'How would I say this?'

I would just say it in my own words, and they would go, 'Yeah, we like that better. That makes so much more sense.' It's almost like she became alive in me as well, and I understood the way that she wanted to communicate."

With an actor so in tune with their character, Kay Vess is shaping up to be a classic Star Wars underworlder. Indeed, it'll be interesting to see how her character takes shape as a worthy addition to the franchise's pantheon of unforgettable scoundrels like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Atton Rand from Knights of the Old Republic.
