Is Speak No Evil A Remake? Inside The Blumhouse Horror Movie

Blumhouse's latest horror movie is Speak No Evil, a story about a vacation gone terribly wrong, and fans want to know if the movie is a remake or not.

Written and directed by Chris Nash, In A Violent Nature is told from the POV of the slasher villain Johnny (Ry Barrett). This is a fun and fresh twist on the modern slasher genre, which usually focuses on the main characters, from the side players who get killed instantly to the final girl who makes it to the end credits. The movie has a 79% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and 45% on the Popcornmeter. Many reviews, including one from Poylgon, praised the level of gore in the movie. Others enjoyed the practical effects in the movie.

A woman standing in the woods with Johnny the villain behind her in A Violent Nature

Fans of In A Violent Nature who couldn't get enough will be glad to know there will be a sequel, which Variety reported in July 2024. Scott Shooman, the head of the AMC Networks film group, praised Johnny as "a new slasher icon" and said:

"With the sequel, we aim to prove that Johnny can be bigger, meaner, and his kills can only get more impressive.”

In A Violent Nature also stars Charlotte Creaghan, Reece Presley, Andrea Pavlovic, Liam Leone, and Cameron Love. Its run time is 1 hour and 34 minutes. Many solid horror movies are shorter than 90 minutes, and this clever slasher is the perfect length. Since audiences watch the entire story through Johnny's eyes, the movie stands out and feels powerful. Although audiences are used to sympathizing with a main character and that doesn't happen here, that makes it an even more compelling viewing experience.

When reflecting on the most famous and iconic slasher villains or memorable villains that could have led to a franchise, it's clear that Johnny is one for the slasher history books. He has the right costume, including the creepy covering that he wears over his head, and he also targets people in the woods, which also explains the clever title.

Johnny in In A Violent Nature

In an interview with Time Magazine, writer/director Nash shared more of the background behind In A Violent Nature. He shared that he thought about a unique way that Johnny could use weapons since so many slasher villains have had machetes or axes and also said that the movie is a way to honor the tradition of the subgenre. He said

"We just moved the camera to a different spot. We didn't want to make this a mockery or a satire of what a slasher traditionally is. We wanted to pay homage to those films."
