Now that Minecraft's developer, Mojang, is a subsidiary of Microsoft, it opens up new avenues for a sequel. Although the thought has been entertained, it appears as if Microsoft has no plans to make the game into a series. Instead, spin-off games like Minecraft: Story Mode and Minecraft Dungeons have carried on the Redstone torch. Still, there's no shortage of fun things to occupy oneself with while playing.

Minecraft is one of the best-selling games of all time. Outside of mining and building are perilous places like the Nether world and the End. In Survival, players must forage to survive an onslaught of mobs and starvation. For players who have logged countless hours into the game already and are seeking other things to do, here are some amusing options for those bored and eager for new Minecraft experiences.

Updated March 7, 2025 by Ben Painter: Minecraft is a never-ending game, with no real plot. Gamers can spend hours doing exactly what they want. However, despite this, sometimes players get stuck on what to do next, seemingly overwhelmed by the immense possibilities.

Minecraft is constantly being updated with new features rolled out almost monthly. There is an even bigger incentive to fire up Minecraft once again with the Jack Black-led A Minecraft Movie right around the corner. This update adds five more things players can do when they are bored in Minecraft.

1 Create Some Music

You Will Need: Note Blocks, Redstone, Repeaters

Gamers can collect music discs from various structures and mobs to play music through a jukebox block. However, there is a way that Minecraft players can make their own music using Note Blocks. The block can change notes, so combining them in a sequence will create a piece of music.

Automatically, they can be triggered using a series of redstone and repeaters to allow for the correct delay for a chosen song. Practically any song can be replicated using this format and the musically inclined player can even write their songs. There are plenty of tutorials available online that will show players how to create their favorite songs.

2 Build Every Beacon

You Will Need: Iron, Gold, Diamond, Emerald & Netherite Blocks, Beacon?????

Beacons are handy in Minecraft for giving players a specific boost, such as speedier mining or higher jumping, perfect for long builds or mining sessions. Also, it is a way to flex to friends as they are extremely expensive to make.

Five different beacons can be created using Iron, Gold, Diamond, Emerald, and Netherite blocks, each rarer and more expensive than the other. A fun thing to do in Minecraft would be to put the hours in and grind until each beacon can be created. Netherite offers the best boosts to the player.

3 Drain An Ocean

You Will Need: Sponges, Building Blocks, Or A Flying Machine

??????Draining an ocean in the blocky world can cause some issues, but given the time and effort, it will offer a cure for boredom in the game. It will require sectioning off a part of the ocean and using sponges to soak up all the water. It could be done to allow players to build more easily underwater.

There is a practical reason for doing this, and this involves the Ocean Monument structure. Draining this of water makes it a lot simpler to harvest the blocks within without the Guardians causing any problems for the player.

4 Collect One Of Every New Animal Variant

You Will Need: Adventuring, Leads, Food

In the Minecraft update 1.21.60, brand-new variants of the classic Pig, Cow, and Chicken mobs were released, freshening things up for the player. Two new versions of each animal can now be found in Warm or Cold climate biomes, and gamers should travel to each one to bring them home for any farm or zoo builds.

Adding this is awesome as it was highly requested and was always found in various modpacks online. The highland cow, found in Cold biomes, is definitely a welcome addition. It may not cure the boredom for long, but players may want to take it one step further and build a specific enclosure for all six of the new variants.

5 Find The Pale Garden & The Creaking

You Will Need: Adventuring

The latest new biome is the Pale Garden, which is what it says on the tin, an eerie biome with pale trees and a brand-new white wood for players to use in their builds. In this biome, there is a spooky mob, the Creaking, which spawns from a Creaking Heart found in the trees.

By destroying the heart block, it produces resin which can be used as a decorative building block when crafted into blocks or bricks. The Creaking is fun for gamers to play with, although there aren't many uses for the mob. The garden itself offers tons of blocks that cannot be found anywhere else in the game.

6 Dig All Of The Way Down & Build All Of The Way Up

You Will Need: Shovel, Pickaxe & Building Blocks

Every Minecraft player has done this at some point. Digging down to the bottom, where they will find bedrock and build up into the skies until they have reached the max height limit.

This may be a quick fix for boredom, but it will certainly kill a few minutes, maybe sparking something else to do in the blocky world. Gamers must take caution if doing this in survival mode, as players may fall to their deaths if they encounter a cave or fall off of their structure to their doom when up in the clouds.

7 Build A Superhero Lair

You Will Need: Building Blocks

Something that players could do is to build a superhero base in the game, giving the world a protector. This will especially look great in city builds as a secret lair, hidden from the citizens.

Gamers could take inspiration from the Batcave, Iron Man's workshop, or Superman's Fortress of Solitude to make an epic superhero base in their world. Or, they could completely create a new hero, perhaps "The Iron Golem" or "Redstoneman" and make it Minecraft-themed to better suit the world.

8 Create Some Bundles

Bundles are a brand-new feature in Minecraft. They have been in the game previously but were removed. However, in the latest update, they were re-introduced but this time permanently. The item is used to store more things in the inventory, freeing up space with an extra 64-item limit storage, pretty handy when out exploring.

They can be crafted simply with 1 Leather & 1 String and can even be dyed for better organization. A fun thing to do when bored in Minecraft is to sort out the inventory using bundles to save on storage space.

9 Design A New Dimension

You Will Need: Building Blocks

There are currently two dimensions in Minecraft, the End & the Nether, which have their unique feel and design. What gamers can do when bored in the game is to create an entirely new one.

A common idea is for a dimension to be up in the sky, similar to heaven, with a new block style and design that will look different from those seen on the ground below. A popular version of this is the Aether dimension, which can be found in various mod designs. Players could vary this up and design a brand-new dimension completely. It is up to one's imagination.

10 Try Out Some Official Add-Ons

You Will Need: A Stable Version Of Minecraft, Money

Something that fans have been requesting for a long time was Add-Ons, things that aren't in vanilla Minecraft that can be purchased to upgrade the experience. These can be purchased and installed from the official Minecraft Marketplace.

There are hundreds of different add-ons that players can explore, including biomes, mobs, new minigames, skins, furniture, and animations. The possibilities are endless for players, and they can be used to customize their experience. If there is something that gamers would like to be added to the game, chances are there is a way to do that with the add-ons feature.

11 Collect One Of Every Block

With over 1,000 different blocks (and all their variations) in Minecraft, it's a big task to collect one of every block. Some blocks, like Dirt or Stone, will be a piece of cake, but there are some, such as the Sponge, Dragon Egg, and even Snowy Grass that are very difficult to obtain.

Once the player has done the near-impossible task of acquiring one of every block, then they could design some museum or display to house their collection. Being bored in Minecraft will be a thing of the past with this mission, which will require venturing into every biome, dimension, and deep underground.

12 Create Lore For The World

You Will Need: Imagination

A game is nothing without a good lore behind it. Minecraft doesn't have a lot of lore. There are hints with some mobs and structures, but largely it is up to the player to fill the gaps.

To help build a more immersive world, players could invent their own lore and create builds that fit in with the new story they have crafted. Things like ancient ruins of a civilization from the past, alien spaceships that have crash-landed, or an infected city with a sprawl of fungus. It is up to the players to decide the direction they take, but the more work put into building the lore, the better and more in-depth the Minecraft world will become.

13 Build Famous Landmarks

Another thing to deter the boredom in Minecraft is to re-create some famous landmarks from around the world. The Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, or the Roman Colosseum would be awesome buildings to see replicated in blocky form. It would take some serious materials and time to do, however.

Perhaps gamers could head in the direction of only creating a landmark that they have seen in person, acting as somewhat of a digital scrapbook. The landmarks don't even have to be any famous ones, maybe ones from around the player’s hometown.

14 Create The Ultimate Set Of Armor

You Will Need: Netherite Armor, Enchanting Table, Enchanted Books, Lapis Lazuli, XP, Anvil

There are some tough battles in the game, the Ender Dragon, the Wither, and the new Trail Chambers in update 1.21, which feature tons of mobs like the new Breeze and Bogged Skeleton.

To counter this, the best set of armor needs to be crafted to give the player the best chance of not dying. This is especially relevant to players of Hardcore. Netherite is the best base layer for armor, which can be crafted from Ancient Debris found in the Nether. Then gamers will need the best enchantments to go along with it: Unbreaking, Protection, Thorns and, of course, Mending, which will ensure that the armor will never be broken.

15 Draw Inspiration From Other Games

You Will Need: Some Other Games

If gamers are still stuck on what to do in Minecraft, then a good idea would be to just not play the game. Play something else, but keep Minecraft in the back of your mind and look for inspiration on what to create.

Dive into the sci-fi worlds of Halo or Mass Effect for some space-themed builds, or journey back in time with Assassin's Creed or Red Dead Redemption. Inspiration can come from anywhere and this concept can be applied to movies, TV shows, comic books, and just about everything else. If gamers are lacking in building ideas, it is not a bad thing to look at other games for inspiration.

16 Collect Every Type Of Wolf

You Will Need: Two Wolves

As part of the 1.21 update, the long-awaited feature of different types of wolves has been added. Just like how cats have various breeds in the game, wolves also now benefit from this.

There are nine different wolves to collect: the pale wolf found in the taiga biome, the rusty wolf in jungle biomes, the spotted wolf in savannah biomes, the black wolf in old-growth pine taiga biomes, the striped wolf in badlands, the snowy wolf in snowy plains, the ashen wolf in snowy taigas, the woods wolf in forest biomes, and the chestnut wolf in old-growth spruce taigas. To celebrate the new update, gamers can search high and low in their worlds to collect every type of these new wolves. They can even dress them up in wolf armor, which can be crafted from armadillo scutes.

17 Take Part In Trial Chambers

You Will Need: Trial Chamber Structure, Combat Supplies

Another highly requested addition for Minecraft was the inclusion of some more combat-based tests in the game. This came in the form of Trial Chambers. Similar to a raid, gamers would be put up against various enemies and be rewarded with a trial key, which can open vaults to receive a wide variety of prizes.

These rewards are the usual: emeralds, gold, diamonds, and enchanted books, but there are exclusive items that can only be found within the trail chambers. These include new banner patterns, armor trims, and a heavy core, which is used to craft the new melee weapon, the mace. Trail chamber rewards can be boosted using the Bad Omen effect. This, of course, increases the difficulty of the enemies.

18 Create An Art Gallery

You Will Need: Building Blocks, Paintings

There is something about collecting each variation of an item in Minecraft that is perfect for those looking for something to do in the blocky world. Gamers can collect each painting and create an art gallery to house them in. This will look perfect in city builds, adding to the immersion of the world.

There are 25 paintings in the game, so it will take some effort to create a building to store all of them. The paintings themselves do not require much work, as they are generated randomly when crafted from eight sticks and one block of wool. The real effort here is creating the building.

19 Build A Sports Arena

There isn't much reason to create a sports arena in the game. There is no real way to play soccer, football, or basketball in vanilla Minecraft. This build will be purely aesthetic. Most major cities in the world have at least one sports arena, so it's fun to create one in a Minecraft city.

Gamers can create their own arena, or replicate one of their favorite sports teams' arenas in real life. Either way, the player's decision does not change the fact it will take a lot of building blocks and a lot of time. Players won't be bored for long with this task.

20 Get Rich By Trading With Villagers

You Will Need: Emeralds, Various Trading Items

???????The currency of Minecraft is emeralds, and the easiest way to obtain lots of money is to trade with villagers. Each villager has a different job and will require different types of items to be traded with. For example, the Fletcher's base item is sticks, an easy item to obtain. In no time, the player will have a lot of emeralds.

Villagers' trades will be locked after a certain amount is traded, so it would be wise to create a villager trading hall and fill it with various professions. This way, there will be no waiting around to trade all items collected. Being rich means that gamers can then buy all that they want and show off their stacks of emeralds to friends.
