Sometimes, the best offensive option in Monster Hunter Now to deal with the strongest monsters in the game is a simple bonk from a hammer. Wielders of this giant melee weapon sacrifice speed for power, meaning that it takes immense skill and timing to work out when best to smack your target around without getting interrupted by an enemy attack.

However, if you're used to the hammer's momentum, not even the toughest monsters in Monster Hunter Now can withstand its raw stunning power. To get the most out of your blunt instrument of destruction, here is the best Hammer build, complete with options for Driftsmelt slots for smithing new perks, as well as the best armor parts to wear.

Best Monster Hunter Now Hammer build

Monster Hunter Now Hammer: all the weapons lined up in a row.

There are many different options for Hammers available in Monster Hunter Now, but the best one to use is the Devil's Due. You will need to upgrade this to at least Grade 8 for it to make an impact and it requires Deviljho monster parts to upgrade. However, once you do, it unlocks the Slugger ability that, at rank 1, increases the Stun Power of the Hammer by 10%. Since the main goal of the Hammer is to knock over an enemy or briefly interrupt their flurry of attacks, this buff to stunning is vital. It is a Dragon-based weapon, so it's ideal to have a second weapon to deal with any resistance to the Dragon element.

With your armor, your best bet is to invest in perks that make every blow with your Hammer hurt a ton. You'll want a single level in Lock On to target specific monster parts, while ranks in Dragon Attack take advantage of your weapon's element for more damage. For those who can reliably attack while at full health, a couple of ranks in Peak Performance can increase your attack power by 100.

Finally, a couple of ranks in Special Boost increase your Special Skill damage by 15%. If you're wondering why we've gone for Thunder Resistance, it comes with the Rajang Helm that has two Driftsmelt slots. Here is the best Monster Hunter Now Hammer build:

Best Hammer build Driftsmelt Slots

Best Monster Hunter Now Hammer build: the Driftsmelt machine, some ores, and a piece of armor.

Our Hammer build gives us a grand total of six Driftsmelt Slots to fill. That said, you will need to upgrade all but one of the armor pieces to Grade 8, so you won't get the most out of this build until that point. It's in your best interest to hunt as many Pink Rathian, Deviljho, and Rajang as possible. There is a fair bit of luck involved when forging Driftstones as it's random what you get, but here are our recommendations on which ones to aim for, from those with specific Driftsmelt Ore requirements to common perks:

  • Peak Performance - increases your attack power when your health is full. Increases by 50 at rank 1 and 250 at rank 5. (Crimson only)
  • Concentration - increases the Special Gauge fill rate. Increases by 5% at rank 1 and 30% at rank 5. (Azure only)
  • Divine Blessing - increases the chance of reducing damage from a monster's attack. This is a 30% chance to reduce it by 50% at rank 1 and a 50% chance to reduce it by 80% at rank 5. (Amber only)
  • Special Boost - increases the damage of Special Skills. At rank 1 it's by 10% and by rank 5 it's 30%. (Pale only)
  • Attack Boost - increases your attack power. Rank 1 increases by 20, while rank 5 increases by 120. (Common)
