In a shock announcement at The Game Awards 2024, FromSoftware has announced a brand-new Elden Ring co-op game, Elden Ring: Nightreign. The Game Awards is known for its big world premiere announcements, and with Elden Ring: Nightreign, the 2024 version has already delivered plenty to get excited about.

2022's Elden Ring was a massive success for FromSoftware. The open world RPG smashed records and became one of the highest-rated video games ever made. It was supported post-launch with updates that fixed bugs and added new features, but it wasn't until 2024 that FromSoftware finally released the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Like the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree earned widespread critical acclaim, but with FromSoftware confirming that there wouldn't be a DLC 2, many fans lost hope for future Elden Ring adventures. That's what made FromSoftware's big announcement at The Game Awards 2024 such a surprise.

At The Game Awards 2024, Geoff Keighley revealed Elden Ring: Nightreign, a standalone co-op Elden Ring game that's set to release in 2025. Elden Ring: Nightreign will once again see players exploring the Lands Between, but this time it seems the adventure will be a fully co-op experience, as opposed to the restrictions that were present in the original game. The incredibly exciting trailer shows all kinds of new features that fans can look forward to as they explore the massive open world and, in typical FromSoftware fashion, fight challenging bosses.

One new feature that was shown multiple times in the trailer is the ability to glide using a kind of spectral bird. Gliding is a common feature in similar open world games, like Elden Ring inspiration The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and so it's exciting to see it featured in Nightreign. This should allow for more exploration options as players explore Elden Ring: Nightreign's massive world with their friends.

Hardcore FromSoftware fans will no doubt pick apart the Elden Ring: Nightreign trailer for clues on what to expect from the final game. As far as official details go, not a whole lot is known about Nightreign so far beyond the fact that it's standalone, it's coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, and it will release in 2025. It's safe to say that few expected FromSoftware's next game to release in 2025, a year that is quickly becoming one of the most jam-packed in the history of the video game industry.
