Path of Exile 2 Currencies like the Orb of Chance can be used to upgrade item rarity, add modifiers to an item, add Rune slots, or otherwise alter a piece of gear for mostly-beneficial effects. The Orb of Chance is one of two Currencies (alongside the Vaal Orb) that have a chance to destroy the item it is applied to.

When you use an Orb of Chance on an applicable item, there is a small chance for it to be turned into a Unique item of that gear type. However, there is a very high chance that the item will be destroyed instead, alongside the Orb of Chance.
Path of Exile 2 players can use three methods to get Chance Shards and Orbs of Chance: disenchanting Unique gear, hoping for a random drop, or trading for one in the Currency Exchange.
Disenchant Unique Items For Chance Shards
The only reliable way to build up Chance Shards to get an Orb of Chance is to disenchant Unique items you find while playing Path of Exile 2. Disenchanting a Magic item rewards a Transmutation Shard, and Disenchanting a Rare item rewards a Regal Shard. You need 10x of each of these Shards to create an Orb of Transmutation or Regal Orb, which can be used to create Magic and Rare items.
It's essentially a recycling system, and along the same lines, Disenchanting Uniques rewards a Chance Shard. You need 10x Chance Shards to create a single Orb of Chance, but Unique items can be extremely powerful and it's generally worth keeping one copy of each.
If you collect a duplicate Unique of one you already own, there's no reason not to Disenchant the one with the lower-rolled stats. If you really want an Orb of Chance, and don't mind sacrificing some Uniques for builds you don't typically play, Disenchant other Uniques to get more Chance Shards faster.
Kill Enemies & Loot Containers For Chance Shard & Orbs
In Path of Exile 2 Orb of Chance Currency items have a small chance to drop from every enemy, but a higher chance to drop from Magic and Rare enemies. You can tell if a mob is Magic or Rare if its name is Blue or Yellow, respectively.
As you level up in the campaign, the normal difficulty Acts 1 to 3 have a very small chance to drop Orbs, Cruel difficulty enemies drop them a bit more often, and enemies in the endgame and in Atlas maps have the highest chance.

In all of these three stages of progression you can also find Chance Shards as a drop from enemies and containers both. In fact, containers appear to have a slightly higher chance to spawn rare Currencies than regular enemies. Be sure to stop and open every Chest and unhighlighted container (like Urns or Bottles) for more chances to get Chance Orbs.
Chance Shards have a significantly higher chance to drop from the same sources as Orbs of Chance, but you need 10 Chance Shards to create a single Orb of Chance.
Most players find their first Orb of Chance drop in the Cruel campaign, though some have found this highly coveted item in earlier Acts. The best way to farm Orb of Chance in Path of Exile 2 is to take on Cruel difficulty Acts and endgame Maps and simply kill enemies and loot containers.
However, if you have an abundance of other Currencies, you may have more luck simply trading for one at the Currency Exchange.
Use Currency Exchange To Trade For Orb of Chance
The Currency Exchange is a feature in Path of Exile 2 that allows players to request specific Currency items in exchange for others. The Gambling vendor in each camp/town should have this option available once you reach Cruel difficulty. In the Clearfell Encampment, speak with Finn to immediately access this system upon unlocking it.
Click on the top-left box and select Orb of Chance from the table of Currencies. Then, click on the top-right box to see the list of your currently-owned Currencies. Click on each to see the number of each item you need to purchase an Orb of Chance.
These numbers can fluctuate. One day, it will only be worth maybe 11 or 12 Exalted Orbs, for example. But the next day, it might jump up to 20. At the time of publication, an Orb of Chance could be purchased for these approximate numbers of other popular currencies.

If you have enough of another Currency to purchase an Orb of Chance, simply confirm your selection and an Orb of Chance will appear in your inventory in exchange for the required number of other Currency.
