With more Legendary and Mythical Pokemon being added to the series all the time, the mobile game Pokemon GO can't always keep up. Legendary and especially Mythical Pokemon are typically the focus of major events or Special Research tasks, meaning that only a handful are released every year. While many of the ones still missing from Pokemon GO are from more recently released regions like Galar and Paldea, there are a few older Pokemon yet to make their debut. However, 2025 could finally be the year for one neglected mythical Pokemon: Volcanion, hailing from the Kalos region.

Pokemon GO: All Legendary and Mythical Pokemon Still Missing So Far
These Legendary and Mythical Pokemon are still unavailable in mobile game Pokemon Go and their release dates and methods are still unknown.
Volcanion Is The Only Missing Kalos Mythical In Pokemon GO
The Kalos region, inspired by France, was introduced in the sixth generation of Pokemon games, Pokemon X and Y. There are three Mythical Pokemon native to Kalos: Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion. The previous two have both appeared in Pokemon GO, with Hoopa in particular being the centerpiece of a major event thanks to its different forms. Unlike the other two, however, Volcanion, a Fire/Water-type Mythical Pokemon, is still missing from the mobile game. No reason has been provided for its absence, although it may simply have been overlooked as developer Niantic chose to focus on other Legendary and Mythical Pokemon instead.
Diancie came to Pokemon GO during Pokemon GO Fest 2023, and then was made globally available in 2024 as a reward for completing the Glitz and Glam Special Research. Hoopa, meanwhile, was the centerpiece of the Season of Mischief in 2021. Its two Forms, Confined and Unbound, were released as part of a two-part event beginning with Hoopa's Arrival and continuing into Mischief Unbound. This is one of the most extensive and elaborate release events for a single Pokemon in Pokemon GO, complete with in-game celebration, themed avatar items, multiple research tasks and more.
Pokemon Z-A's Launch Is The Perfect Time For Volcanion's GO Debut
Volcanion might finally get its chance to be in the spotlight when Pokemon Legends Z-A launches in 2025. Based on its title, this Legends game will probably focus on Zygarde, but it is likely that other Legendary and Mythical Pokemon from Kalos will appear in some form. Pokemon Legends Arceus did not just focus on the title Pokemon, but included late game quests for catching Pokemon such as Darkrai, the Lake Guardian Trio, and Shaymin (although some of these quests did require players to have save data from other Pokemon games).
Volcanion making an appearance in Legends Z-A seems likely, especially as it received so little focus in the original Kalos games. Its lore briefly mentions that it has the capability to blow away mountains using the steam it produces, which could be useful as part of the “revitalization project” of Lumiose City mentioned in Legends Z-A's launch trailer. However, because Volcanion is said to live far away from humans, it could be quite difficult to catch, requiring players to make a lengthy journey to its mountain home.
Volcanion debuting in Pokemon GO would be a perfect tie-in with the launch of Legends Z-A, especially as Zygarde is already present in the game. It could easily be the reward for a Z-A themed Special Research task to celebrate the launch of the game, which is scheduled for 2025 but does not yet have an officially revealed release date. Although Volcanion should ideally be the focus, Zygarde could still be relevant if the research or event offered a way for players to temporarily collect Zygarde Cells more quickly in Pokemon GO. This is quite a lengthy task, and collecting a large number is necessary to change Zygarde's form.
