Insomniac Games procured a spot in the April 2021 PlayStation State of Play to show off some new Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart gameplay. Leading up to the event, Insomniac revealed Rift Apart's new female Lombax name to be "Rivet" and then followed that with several details about her to prepare fans for the State of Play, which concluded recently. The event didn't give much more insight into Rivet's character, but it did flesh out her world.
To do this, Insomniac premiered an extended gameplay trailer during?the State of Play that showed Ratchet and Rivet tackling the game's earlier worlds of Nefarious City and Sargasso. During this, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart?Creative Director Marcus Smith walked fans through the trailer and pointed out everything new to the franchise that it displayed, such as weapons and mechanics. However, the most particular of these details come from the content displayed in Nefarious City.
In the trailer, Ratchet lands in the urban sprawl of Nefarious City after Nefarious' malfunctioning dimensionator separates him and Clank, who subsequently gets picked up by Rivet. After learning of Nefarious' rule over the dimension and of the organized resistance fighting against him, Ratchet witnesses Rivet and Clank rocket off-world and hear from Mrs. Zerkon about how to chase. In this dimension, Mrs. Zerkon is a member of the resistance fighting against?Nefarious, not a robot controlled by him.
As Ratchet makes his way through Nefarious City, he picks up several new abilities, such as wall-running and dashing. Each one, Smith explains, serves to make the mobility and combat of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart more fluid. For example, the dashing ability acts as another way for players to dodge, as it momentarily phases Ratchet out of existence. Players will also have access to new Rift Apart weapons that take full advantage of the PS5's Dualsense controller, something PlayStation has been increasingly emphasizing in its first-party titles.
Rivet's portion of the trailer also shows her utilizing some of the new mechanics too as she takes Clank to her hideout on Sargasso, but more information comes near the trailer's end. Rift Apart will include all sorts of mini-games and side quests, such as glitch game modes, new open areas to explore, dimensional Clank puzzles, arena challenges, armors, and even sustained aerial combat. The ending also, of course, mentions the new?Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart?photo mode.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart arrives on June 11, 2021, for PS5.
